Director of Congregational Learning, Memphis

Job description -  

Beth Sholom Synagogue, Memphis’ only USCJ-affiliated Conservative synagogue, seeks a Director of Congregational Learning to start as soon as possible. Our DCL will have an engaging, warm personality and promote a unique and enthusiastic learning environment grounded in core Jewish values and a commitment to excellence. She/he will create and facilitate education experiences to strengthen the congregation, build connections between families, and facilitate lifelong learning. She/he will find and incorporate innovative materials and methods of Jewish education, including the use of technology inside and outside the classroom. Our DCL will be part of our synagogue community and will represent the synagogue in the larger Memphis Jewish community.


Qualifications –

Degree (preferably Masters) in Jewish studies or education, or rabbinic degree, or equivalent work experience.

Experienced teacher comfortable working with all age groups, as well as learning style differences.

Trained in alternative/creative learning structures, and experiential learning.

Someone willing to serve as an appropriate role model within a Conservative framework, and able to teach Conservative Halachah as appropriate.

Well versed in Shabbat and Holiday prayer services and observances.

Strong communication and relationship building skills.

Track record of workplace collaboration, good ethics and work as a team player.

Interest in working inclusively around areas of disabilities, social/economic status, gender identification, age, race/ethnic makeup, sexual orientation, family background – of parents or children.


Responsibilities include -

Managing our USCJ-awarded Framework of Excellence Religious School, including supervising the teachers.

Managing our USY and Kadima youth groups, as well as our two groups for young families. Serving as a synagogue liaison to our member children enrolled in BBYO.

Assist in our adult education program, including teaching classes.

Engagement both inside and outside the congregation - to bring current members together, and to bring new families in.

Running youth/family programming for Shabbat, holidays, social interaction, community building.

Developing and managing the education budget in conjunction with rabbi and lay leadership, participating in fundraising and grant-writing.

Planning and leading travel/programming for local and out-of-town field trips, retreats, youth conventions, etc.

Organizing and managing our Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, in conjunction with Rabbi and staff.
